Sister Dorothy Stang, an American, moved to the Amazon 22 years ago to help poor farmers build independent futures for their families. She was shot to death on February 12, in Anapu, Para, a section of Brazil's Amazon rain forest. She was murdered less than a week after meeting with the country’s human rights officials about threats from loggers and landowners to local farmers. She had been quoted as saying, “I don’t want to flee, nor do I want to abandon the battle of these farmers who live without any protection in the forest. They have the sacrosanct right to aspire to a better life on land where they can live and work with dignity while respecting the environment.” That’s an American hero. Sister Dorothy Stang was gunned down in the city of Boa Esperança located in the south of Minas Gerais state in Brazil. The two main parts of that local economy are coffee plantations and tourism. Until the murderers are brought to justice it will be necessary to work ceaselessly in order to slow and obstruct business in Boa Esperança, and greater Minas Gerais state. If Brazil cannot bring justice to the world regarding the murder of Sister Dorothy Stang then the world will bring justice to Brazil. For decades Brazil has allowed their children to be murdered in the streets of cities. Now they are killing the elderly. Sister Dorothy Stang was 74 years old. She helped the local landowners defend themselves against corruption. A true American.
