I think it's wrong, at least as of now. (That's not to say it won't be true soon.) They were up front about it with Myers; why wouldn't they do the same with Feliz? My guess is that they will not commit themselves to a decision until it's absolutely necessary to do so - at the deadline.

They have until Monday to make it official. I believe Amaro is meeting with some baseball execs on Monday....I think it is either going to be Figgins, DeRosa or Atkins. My money is on Figgins as we need a true leadoff guy.

Figgins would be a nice fit ... sort of. I mean if you could get Figgins from the last few years at those salaries, sure. Is he worth $40 million/4 years? Consider that those would be ages 33-36 for him. His game is based on superb speed. Is he going to maintain that over that period? Or is he going to steadily become a light-hitting, average-running 3B-man with a big salary.

A 2-year deal for Beltre would be better. He would hit more than Feliz and he runs better. One thing that hasn't been mentioned about Pedro is that he is very slow on the base paths. That results in DPs and lost runs. Getting a guy who is younger, quicker, has more power and is otherwise equal to or better than Feliz at his best would be a nice improvement.

Nah, Pedro's slowness doesn't costs us that many runs - he doesn't get on base enough.

(Not quite true, but what's a little exaggeration among friends?)

For all:
The problem is that we have to reach a decision on Pedro before we can talk to these other players - because their current clubs have a unilateral access to them until a fixed date - which is the exact date until which we have such access to Feliz. We guess wrong - we don't have a 3B man for next year or we have two and are spending too much money.

I don't think it will be such a hard decision. Feliz was an upgrade over Nunez/Bell/Dobbs/Helms but I don't think he produced to expectations. Beltre, to me, is intriguing because he should not break the bank on a contract, he's younger and quicker than Feliz, and, importantly, he hits lefties well. That was a big point of weakness for Pedro this year. The Phillies may not need superstar production from their 3B-man, but they need him to hit lefties well to protect Ibanez, Howard and Utley, especially Ibanez, who will bat between Werth and the 3B-man.

How would $20 million/3 years for Beltre sound? Or $15 million/2 years?

Teams have 5 days after the world series to exercise options. But I don't see teams lining up in a bidding war for Feliz. If he is still on Amaro's radar there should be no problem with declining the option and continuing to negotiate with him...

Not sure where they are getting their info. It says the status of Lidge is unclear. He will be back next year and closing. He has a big contract and Rueben has commented on his role on the team.

I think that article is premature. Looks to me almost like they either added Feliz onto the story as an afterthought or included him, then botched the editing of his name from the initial story. They discussed Myers' career at the end of the article. However, they did not discuss Feliz aside from merely listing his name alongside that of Myers.

I previously had read that Amaro intended to discuss a trade of Feliz on Monday at a GMs meeting. Monday is his deadline not to pick up the option on Feliz from what I understand.

I'd like to keep Feliz for his defense.
Maybe Charlie can bat him eighth and Ruiz seventh. It's priceless IMO to have a secure third baseman in the field following the series of misfits we had there in the middle of this decade.

We really missed the real Greg Dobbs and his ability to pick up for Feliz at the plate in the late innings via pinch hitting, etc. Dobbs seems to have been given a pass this season due to health problems?

I honestly am unfamiliar with Figgins as I am with most of the A.L. I hear he's fast but, like Feliz, has little power. I assume Figgins hits for a higher average but below .300?

A young possible stud pitcher to give up for an all star infielder. Too early to give up on Hamels. Remember pitching wins it not hitting and we have enough of that. If we were to do that why not package for Halladay which I would not yet. I think Hamels will bounce back. He is only 25 or so.

Unfortunately Lidge has that big contract so we keep him but an additional reliever like the ones I see mentioned sound good except rodney.

I think the Phils have pitching answers in their farm system. Third base is a black hole for the Phils. Anything could happen. The Phils now have been to two WS, and hitting was not a strong point. That is odd.
