I just checked Figgins stats on the Angels website. Since 2005, he has stolen 231 bases!

He even had 62 in 2006!

He has to be one of the top leadoff hitters in the game...

He would be a great fit in the Phils lineup and allow the Phils to reconsider whether to sign Vic (who would take over the leadoff spot in 2011) or resign Werth long term.

Ruben is looking beyond 2010 for RH power bat to protect Howard and signing Figgins would mean keeping Werth and letting Vic go...

All we need is a time machine to go back to 2005 and sign him. Unfortunately, he will now be available in 2010 ... and at a very high price.

If he is looking for 4 years I would have to say we would be dumb to sign him. Now if you are talking a Wright or Zimmerman no problem:) Hard to believe we have not had a guy in our system that can't play 3rd base. I would hope they would be looking a little harder at draft time. It has been a longtime since our system has produced a 3rd baseman

I guess that's just the way things go. For a long time we were getting sub-par production from first base and from centerfield. Now both are strengths. I have come around on Ruiz as the number 1 catcher, though I would like to see more value than Bako at number 2, but 3B remains a real lost opportunity. As does the bench. Amaro's number 1 job, I think, has to be constructing a valuable bench. This year the bench was awful. All participants were worse than 2008. Stairs, Dobbs, Bruntlett, Bako (back-up catcher). Maybe Francisco was better than Taguchi, but that's hardly an accomplishment. I want to see a quality bench + the real integration of young players. Rotate Taylor in to sub for Ibanez and Werth. Get a guy who can truly spell Rollins and Utley. Get a catcher who gives you something useful, like a right-handed pinch hit bat. And let's get some youth in the bullpen. Mathieson, Bastardo, ... maybe Escalona or whoever. The Phillies can save money there by combining guys like that with Lidge, Romero, Madson, Park, ...

I think our pen will be fine but someone needs to take over if Lidge has a repeat. I think Lidge will bounce back and be fine. The whole pen was out of wack this year due to Lidge. I think by the time post season comes around we will have a kid or 2 helping the bench. I still think DeRosa is a good option, because he can hit and play anywhere on the field. If we get Figgins we still need a good utility player. Stairs, Eric and Bako will be gone and it should not take too much to replace any of them.

Lidge had as bad a year as the a relief pitcher could have and they were still 2 wins from a WS crown. If Park comes back and if Romero is healthy, I am ok with a bullpen of those 2, Lidge, Madson, and a collection of young guys and role players. Guys like Bastardo and Mathieson have a lot of potential and it would be nice to see them get developed. They'd also be cheap, which would provide some payroll flexibility in other areas.

The bench is a much bigger area of concern. The bench played poorly through most of the year and even worse in the postseason.

I dont want anyone "protecting" Howard against lefties. I would hope they pitch around him, rather than pitch him tough because a good RH hitter is on deck. As you may know he doesnt hit them so well. :)

Your confidence in Lidge could be wishful thinking. Based on his career in Houston, 2008 was an absolute peak/career year. They should find a way to replace him. A WS contender has to be better, more dependable at closer.

2008 would be a career year for any pitcher...no one can duplicate that...partly skill...partly magic...all the stars aligned....the baseball gods finally gave the phils a break...
