Need PITCHING. Trade Happ and minor league prospect. I like Happ but lefty and expendable. Lee makes 8 mil this year. Pay Halladay his $15 mil (lose Myers $12 mil). After this year you decide who to sign long term, Lee or Halladay (assuming Cole is right). Can't start season with Cole being a question. This could also be insurance for Cole. If he falters trade him and keep both Lee and Halladay.
It's a great day for hockey...it use to be!

I really like the idea of acquiring Halladay via trade. I think we've got just enough prospects and spare parts to get it done.

I don't care if it's one year or many, getting Halladay makes us a legitimate contender.

That's a move that makes the other guys worry.

I gotta believe that other teams will also be bidding for Halladay if he is available.

At the trade deadline, there were only so many buyers.

In the offseason, it'll be all the big market teams.

I'd love to hear some news from the meetings this week that the Phils and Blue Jays reopened talks.

I dont like this idea of getting Halladay to go with Lee and then deciding which to keep. I say if we get Halladay it should be for long term (4-5 years). I say find position players to trade to offset the bump in salary. Having an excellent prospect like Taylor seemingly ready to make the jump could make Ibanez a good guy to trade for prospects either befor or during the season. People always claim pitching is the most important thing, but always balk at giving up a good hitter to get a very good pitcher.

Getting Halladay to go with Lee would be absolutely sick.

Tough to trade Ibanez with his injury and salary over the next two years, but agree that he could be a piece to move, especially if we want to extend Werth.

Other possibilites are Hamels, Happ, Kendrick, Blanton, though I think Blanton is in his last year so it's unlikely they'd take him.

Toronto wanted a boatload of our top prospects. I wonder what the price is now.

Honestly, the sh%t the Yankees owners just called the Phillies I might pull the trigger on this deal. Even if it is just to stick it to the Yankees.

If the price is Happ + a minor leaguer, we'd be stupid not to do it. I think Happ and Taylor would be a good first offer. Taylor has no future here as long as health is no issue. And we can't build a championship team keeping prospects in case of injury.

We only need one of Taylor and Brown so we could make this work.

I dont think the phils will re-sign Ibanez nor Werth when their deals end which could open up spots for both Taylor and Brown. That being said if I could get Halladay to go along with Lee and Hamels, that would be our Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz.

Unlike the Yankees, the Phils do have payroll limitations. Where do you fit in Halladay's salary?

The Phils will be at $133M in 2010 with this roster:

Howard $19M
Utley $15M
Rollins $ 7.5M
Feliz $ 5M
Ibanez $11.5M
Victornio$ 5M (est. arb)
Werth $ 7M
Ruiz $ 1M (est. arb)
Francisco$ 1M (est. arb)
Dobbs $ 1.35M
Backup C $800K
Backup IF $800K
Util IF/OF $800K

Lee $9M
Hamels $6.65M
Blanton $7M (est arb)
Happ $700K
Moyer $8M

Lidge $11.5M
Madson$4.5M
Romero $4M
Park $4M (est resign FA)
Eyre $2M
Mathieson/Condrey 500K

2011 Moyer's $8M and Romero's $4M off the books, however, Hamels contract goes up $3M and you will have to bump up Lee from the $9M and Werth from the $7M they are making in 2010.

2012 Ibanez's $11.5 and Lidge's $11.5 off the books.

Dont underestimate Rubes creativeness. I can think of a dozen teams that would take Ibanez's 2 year contract off their hand, dont offer Blanton arbitration and there is $17M freed up right there.

Yank Michael Taylor and his .350 mexican winter league average out of guadalara and tell him to get some rest and be ready for Clearwater come March youre the Phils new Left Fielder kid.

Domonic Brown, JA Happ, Joe Savery youve just been traded to Toronto for Roy Halladay.

Drabek starts the season in Philly as #5 being mentored by Lee,halladay,Hamels and Moyer.

Interesting moves, but Drabek will probably be in the playoff rotation in 2010. Why do I want to blow up my future for Halladay when I have Drabek in the pipeline.?

Drabek cannot be the 5th starter all year if you want him for the playoffs, his innings will be capped at 190.

We've won the pennant two years in a row. We already ARE a legitimate contender.

We were a one trick pony in the World Series.

When Cliff Lee pitched, we were solid.

When someone else pitched, we came undone.

Pedro Martinez got exposed in Game 6. At this point, Pedro may not be back.

Happ should have been our guy in Game 6. He did great during the season. Was that just a mirage?

You cannot bring this same pitching staff into the World Series again next year.

We need another stud in order to dominate.

Maybe "Legitimate Contender" is the wrong term.

Maybe I want us to be favored to win or odds on favorites, or as Jimmy puts it, "The Team to Beat".

Right now, the Yankees are "The Team to Beat".

I am not sure Pedro was exposed as much as he was sick and weak and never should have started to begin with. I don't think he will be back but his pitching was just fine and looked a whole lot better then Pettitte in his 2 other post season appearances. Hamels was the key. Had he pitched well we probably win the series.

I didn't know Pedro was sick and weak.

Did Chollie know?

We should've sent Someone else up there, or applied a quicker hook.

Million dollar question! Who knew. He was sick in game 2 but not weak. This flu takes everything out of you and lasts for weeks. Someone should have seen it before the game started .It was obvious to us on the tv in the first inning. Larry Anderson though he was throwing change ups in the 1st inning .They were all fastballs:)

you have no idea what you are talking about.

hamels is already locked up for 3 years and he is 25. name me other pitchers who are as good as he is at 25 and own an MVP of the WS? uhhmmm, NONE.

halladay is 32, and we would need to give him a $150 mm contract.

Now, we cant afford that and we are also inking Lee to a long term deal.

Hamels has the potential to win 15-20 games every year...

he is a better option than halladay.
