Here are the salaries and players coming off the books. We start at 118 million with Jenkins and Eaton already off the books, I believe. I think we were at 132 with them two.

Myers-12
Feliz-5
Park-2.5
Eyre-2
Durbin-1.6
Stairs-1.6
Trashner-.8

That's about 25 million off the books. That leaves us with 93 million before the guys get raises. I estimate that to be about 20 million. So that leaves our payroll around 113.

Now we obviously need a 3d baseman, a couple BP arms and a starting pitcher. Our payroll will be 140 which is not bad at all according to Rube. Just a few years ago it was under 100.

We have roughly 27 million to spend.

Howard $19M
Utley $15M
Rollins $ 7.5M
Feliz $ 5M
Ibanez $11.5M
Victornio$ 5M (est. arb)
Werth $ 7M
Ruiz $ 1M (est. arb)
Francisco$ 1M (est. arb)
Dobbs $ 1.35M
Backup C $800K
Backup IF $800K
Util IF/OF $800K

Lee $9M
Hamels $6.65M
Blanton $7M (est arb)
Happ $700K
Moyer $8M

Lidge $11.5M
Madson$4.5M
Romero $4M
Park $4M (est resign FA)
Eyre $2M
Mathieson/Condrey 500K

24 players=$133M (With Feliz counting as $5M) To sign Figgins at $10M it would bump our salary to $138M, which is doable.

Moyer would be a placeholder for Drabek who would be in the rotation in Sept. Drabek's innings, however, will be capped at 190 for 2010 (he pitched 160 this year), so if you want him for the playoffs, his innings must be managed in the minors 25 starts at 6IP per from April to Sept. and cannot be the rotation until Sept.)

2011 Moyer's $8M and Romero's $4M off the books.

2012 Ibanez's $11.5 and Lidge's $11.5 off the books.

Lee, Werth, and Blanton can be extended with small increases in their first year salaries in a new deal with jumps for 2012. Most of the built-in raises occur this year. Only Hamels has a significant increase after 2010 and it is less than $3M.

Here's my prediction on what happens. I think Rube wants Figgins for several reasons. He will change our lineup and give us a legit lead off hitter. It gives another switch hitter with speed to potentially replace Vic if we have to move him in a year or two. I think we need to sign Figgins, sign another good BP arm that can close like a JJ Putz or Gonzalez from the Braves. resign Park and Eyre. Bring in Mark Derosa.

I would wait on a starting pitcher until the trade deadline to see where we stand on Hamels. We also would only have to pay half his salary because the season would be half way over.

DeRosa would be too expensive if you signed Figgins. If we kept Feliz, then I would pursue DeRosa, but with Figgins there won't be enough ABs for him.

Don't underestimate Mathieson. Who was Putz before he burst onto the scene a few years ago? What about Seattle's closer this year, Aardemsa? Pitchers with Mathieson's stuff emerge all the time out of nowhere to become closers.

Drabek will be your SP "deadline" move for the playoffs.

I think Derossa would get a ton of playing time with Figgins or not. Utley, Rollins and Ibanez all need to take a break next season and he fills in perfectly.

If I'm paying Figgins $10 million per year, I'm not platooning him. DeRosa will be looking for a full-time gig or 400-500 ABs from his new team, which he won't get filling in for Figgins, Rollins, and Utley. Remember you will have to keep Francisco and Dobbs sharp by having them spell the OFs for days off.

You might be right that Derosa would be too much money but we do need a guy that fits the bill. Bruntlett doesn't cut it. Utley and Rollins need rest this season.

Agree that we really need a big bench upgrade. If not DeRosa, who would fit?

Lots of names, but who wants to come off the bench?

Jerry Hairston?

Juan Uribe?

Mark DeRosa?

Since Mark Derosa is kind of a home town boy I would think he might want a chance at a ring. He has to realize we would give him a lot of playing time since Utley and Rollins do need to breath.

I don't like DeRosa's stats this year. DeRosa .298 OBP
Feliz .308 OBP
Dobbs .296 OBP
JRoll .296 OBP
Figgins .398 OBP
Uribe .329 OBP
Hairston .352 OBP
