I hope someone in this board can help me out. I used to live near Philly ( Moorestown, N.J ) and I figured someone in Philly can definately answer my question. Where does one get info on having a song licensed so it may be put into print w/o worry of someone else claiming it as their own? I have an incredible song that is about an abusive childhood that would mean alot to alot of hurting souls. I want to share this with the world but I need to be sure that my rights are protected if something great comes of putting this out in the public eye. I have had incredible feedback from those I have read this song. It's really still in the poetry stage but everyone who heard the words think it deserves to be a song. I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

You have the right idea. Go to www.copyright.gov

It's the web site of the U.S. Copyright Office. It's a simple procedure, and the fee is $45.00.

BTW, you cannot copyright a song without music. Call it either lyrics or poem.

Thank-you for your well wishes. I took a brief peek at the site yesterday. Monday I will have time to thoroughly peruse it and get ready to send in my work. I will keep you posted to the outcome.
