LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I read with interest the announcement of the archdiocese's two part event scheduled for Thursday at St. Charles Seminary called "Witness to the Sorrow," and I have to admit that my first reaction was that it appears to be a very carefully orchestrated public relations ploy to win the minds and hearts of catholics in the archdiocese.

Why do I say this? Read the Philadelphia Grand Jury Report page by page and then ask how I can be so incredulous.

It has been just about a year since the PGJ Report was released and the archdiocese is holding a media event?

Pardon me if I consider it, not only disingeneous, but downright insensitive. Two as yet unnamed victims of childhood sexual abuse by priests and one victim's parent strikes me as a too carefully crafted exercise in spin control. Remember, up until just a few years ago the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had Brian Tierney and his top drawer public relations firm as their top gun and intimidator of those same individuals who had gone to the diocese accusing priests of sexual abuse.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has spent hundreds of thousand of dollars for such public relations firms, their very able law firms to defend themselves and intimidate accusers and lobbyists for the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference in the legislative halls of Harrisburg.

Bishop Rigali has not seen fit to disipline even one bishop, monsignor or pastor who was complicit in the cover-up of these crimes.

Cardinal Justin Rigali should make an announcement at this media event tomorrow that he will release to the public all records of all credibly accused priests. The grand jury members and the district attorney had access to them but Philadelphia Catholics have not.

This would give the cardinal the credibility that this media event will not.
