General Flyers discussion -  The thing about the Carcillo debatenotify me whenever anyone posts in this discussionSubscribe

The thing about the Carcillo debate that bothers me the most are those who say the Flyers lost the series to the Pens because he fought Talbot. Anyone who watched the Flyers all last season knows that we lost that game because the Flyers played inconsistent hockey with inconsistent emotion and with inconsistent goaltending. That was no different than half of the games they played all year.

Imagine if Carcillo refused to fight Talbot and the Pens came back and won anyway. The guy would be run out of town before he could get his jersey off!

Carcillo was doomed to be the lightning rod for criticism from the get go due to the price that was paid to bring him here.

Since then, he has been blamed for losing the game because of the Talbot fight (absurd), and for taking ridiculous/stupid penalties that leave the Flyers shorthanded (another inaccuracy).

Criticizing him for lack of productivity is fine, hopefully he will put some numbers up at some point. Otherwise, the guy brings energy to every shift and has refrained from taking excessive penalties like many predicted he would.

But the debate and criticism will always go back to the price paid to bring him here. This debate will never go away and will not change ...unless Carcillo out-produces Upshall in a significant way.

What bothers me the most about the Carcillo debate is that it's still going on.

They guy makes 900K or so. As long as he keeps his butt out of that box with those stupid penalties (not the Talbot thing, but more the cross check/boarding behind the play that result in tough PK's) I couldn't care less.

If someone is playing better than him, he will not play. I am convinced of that.

We're paying more to get rid of Jones than we are to keep Carcillo. He's relatively inconsequential.

Thank You Gentlemen!
Finally some reasonable discussion on Carcillo.
I cannot for the life of me, figure out how "Losing" a fight, loses a game for your team? The worst you can say about that situation (Talbot fight), was it was not a good "decision" to fight while up 3 goals. But if you do accept that fight, you better damn well win it, which he did.
I still hear announcers babbling on how Carcillo lost the series because of that fight. What an absolute load of bs. You don't lose a game because you WON a fight. If he had lost that fight? Then sure, you could pin the turning point of the game on him there.
You gotta like Car Bomb!???? Lol!
I might be a little biased towards him, he was pretty cool signing autographs for my girlfriend's boys at the Flyers vs Leafs preseason game in London.

And good to see him score one tonight. Good to see his toughness around the net payoff for him.

Carcillo had nothing to do with that loss. In fact, that fight, when he kicked Talbot's Arse, should have sparked his team even more. It's the dumb fans who know nothing about hockey who listen to the national broadcaters that day who said themselves that they think that will give the pens the momentum that say crap like that. Real HOCKEY fans as yourself, know that carcillo kicking the crap out of Talbot had nothing to do with the Flyers loss that day. And man, what an awful loss that was. Still not over it! You are 100% right and I totally agree with you!

A lot of this stems from the Pens fans who have made that fight a legendary part of their cup run. I can't count how many times I have heard colour analysts for different teams speak about that being a classic case of a time not to fight.

That fight was NOT the reason we lost that series or the game as many Pens fans would say. The reason we lost that game was that we were up 3-0 and stopped playing/Biron gave up some bad rebounds. Once we lost momentum, we couldn't get it back. Happens all the time in a lot of sports.

Orange and Black attack.

You've just been Pronged!

(2)""I can't count how many times I have heard colour analysts for different teams speak about that being a classic case of a time not to fight.""

1st--But they're Pens fans! WTF do they know! Lol. That's just foolish.

2nd--Being up 3-0, "IS" a CLASSIC case of a time not to accept a fight, just because of the risk factor. Because if you lose the fight, that could possibly give the team that is down a boost or something to rally around. But Carcillo WON! that fight, so that just throws their crap argument out the window. Talbot did do the right thing though. Down by 3, pick a fight, try to create a spark and rally the troops. Didn't work, but other things allowed them to come back.

It boggles my mind every time I hear some of these clown announcers STILL talking of Carcillo and how he lost the series.

LMFAO, Carcillo just scored 2 goals tonight against "the best defensive team in hockey", Buffalo - not to mention caused a 4 on 4 that the Flyers scored on as well.

Bundy was ranting on 'IP all night that Carcillo was the 1st Star & his line was the best on the ice all night long & could have easily scored 4 goals (FWIW).

Just saying.

The return of Betts obviously didn't hurt either.

Aside from the goals, Carcillo had a hell of a game tonight. He was all over the place, banging guys, parking in front of the net. Made good decisions NOT to fight.

Way to go Carzilla!

The Buffalo tv feed just blamed Carcillo for the Hindenburg(sp)crash. Called hime Avery-like in his antics and that the refs should have watched him more.LOL.

Here is the way to look at that situation....

If you were to tell a Pen's fan before Game 6 this is the scenario...

"You are down 3-0 in the second period in Philly and Talbot picks a fight with Carcillo and Carcillo beats the snot out of Talbot, which send the crowd into an even louder and crazy frenzy"

How would you feel about this? Any honest fan would obviously say that isn't the ideal situation.... and I would guess that maybe 1 out of a million would ever say
"Well Talbot got the team fired up, so I'll take that scenario"

It's obvious that had no impact on anything in that game, swatting two pucks out of mid air and the rope-a-dope hockey the flyers played was what caused the collapse nothing the Pen's did.

I don't think they lost the series because of the Carcillo fight, but even Crosby said it fired up his team after the fight. It was a turning point in a key game. Did nothing for the Flyers and helped motivate the Pens. Either way it's history.

I am liking Carcillo's discipline so far this year, looks good on the 4th line.

It was fitting that the team got Carcillo the puck at the end to bookend the scoring for the evening.

He did a great job all night long. If he continues like this, even not scoring 2 goals a night, that 2nd rounder will have been worth it.

Upshall who?

Actually Carcillo has had three good games in a row. Following the game, Carcillo was interviewed and stated that he's happy to play on a checking line, a role in which he says he can excel at.

i agree with those who posted earlier: CARCILLO'S PUMMELING OF TALBOT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LOSS TO THE PENS. NOTHING.

so, crosby said that the fight "fired them up." well, in theory, the flyers were fighting for their playoff life so they should have been equally "fired up." especially after the score got closer and closer.

we need to face it: we lost to a better team, a team that was way better coached.

I hear ya. I think I was watching a Pens game the other night (accidentally, I have Centre Ice and thought I was watching a different game) and they still say that the Carcillo fight was teh reason. Even the knowledgeable TSN people here in Canada say it. Gimme a break. I love Dan Carcillo. He was great tonight, I have not seen him take a dumb penalty yet. Flyers are playing great, and he is a big part of it.

Tonight he was on the 4th line, he seems to be a good fit there for now. If he can stay disciplined and play like he did tonight, he may up to 3d line duty.
