I was wrong about JVR.
I had this kid labelled for a semi-bust because he looked disinterested at times, didn't go to major junior, didn't show much passion or hunger, etc. etc. I knew he had the skill set, but I really didn't think he would produce like he has (yet I drafted him him in every pool I am in so I had an inkling).
I still predict he will slow down in the second half because U.S. Collegians always do (grind of pro sked). And he will struggle in the playoffs for a bit because, again, a whole new ball game for him. I will also admit by bias for players in major junior.
But you can't argue with success. He fits in nicely and is a feather in the cap for Homer for drafting him and keeping him when many of us hoped he wouldn't.

The times are a changing and there are plenty of players who are excelling coming out of college and especially kids who have come from the US Developmental program like JVR.

He may hit a wall during mid season but that remains to be seen?
So far so good and he is gaining more and more confidence with every shift.

About the only thing kids from juniors have over college kids is fighting since it's not permitted in the college game.
Hopefully, he get's some pointers from Berube and Lappy and he learns how to protect himself and stand up for himself or he will end up being like John LeClaire, who never stood up for himself and got pushed around way to much for a man his size.

Your right about that, he used to get punished every game.

How about Bundy also, 6'6 and could fight to save his life

Another player who went through the college system and he admitted it last season on the radio that for him fighting didn't come naturally because he didn't do it much in college hockey.

They play the game differently at the college level and some players just don't add that to their game coming from those programs.

I think you had valid observations.

I also think JvR dialed it up a bunch of notches and kicked it into gear.

Good for all of us.

Oh, no. I stand strong on my Major Junior bias and JVR's success won't change that. They play a pro-style game in the CHL (including fighting), but it is also the travelling, the hectic schedule and practises . . . CHL players are generally more pro ready even though most NCAA grads are a little older.
I used to know a Flyers scout who has since passed on. He maintained Ryan Sittler may have turned out differently had he opted for Major Junior because he had two wasted years of development in NCAA as a third liner.

I once saw LeClair fight when he was in Montreal and he butchered someone from Buffalo in a line-brawl (Mike Hartman maybe?) so I think he was capable of defending himself, he just chose not to. A waste of huge body.

I thought he had the tools, but I didn't think he really stood out at any point in the college ranks. I don't know if he was phoning it while he was playing hockey and going to school for free or what but he was a virtual non-factor in the Frozen four run last year.

To see him now is quite amazing. He really didn't even make a statement during his brief AHL run last year. The only thing I can think is that he got some good advice from somebody and they gave him some confidence. He is certainly making the Lupul/Knuble losses look bearable.

And with the continuing development of Giroux, the two-way play of Asham and Powe, and spark plug type games from AHL'ers called up for injuries, we could make a decent run this year...

It's not just JVR, there are now a bunch of very good players who took the college route.
Not saying it's a better path than juniors and it probably never will be for the reasons that you mentioned but it's improved from the years when Ryan Sittler who ate himself out of an NHL job as opposed to wasting his time playing hockey at the collegiate level. That much I know for sure he was lazy and working out wasn't his strong point.
Then there are a ton of Jamie Leach's who either weren't good enough or had similar training issues and never panned out at the NHL level.

The player has to have the desire and drive to succeed at the NHL level.

LeClair used his body to create space for himself in scoring areas, hardly a waste of a huge body. Anyone who took as much abuse as he did, and didn't retaliate, is pretty tough in my book.

Braydon Coburn and Jeff Carter are both big body guys who played major junior hockey, and neither of those guys are particularly tough.

i thought after watching lacklustre performances at the WJC and the press about his being on the fence that he would be a bust.
