the best way to tell if a defenseman is playing well is not to notice him. most of the great ones get the puck, turn up ice, and make an effective pass to a teamate. luca sbisa did just that when out there last night and if you were watching the game, you hardley noticed him. i love watching this kid and last year he played the same way for the flyers until he was injured, but kept playing and then his game fell apart. hopefully, anaheim will take care of him if he is hurt and it is obvious that sbisa should develop into one of the leagues best puck moving defensemen over the next ten or so years. sbisa should get better as he hits his early twenties too. when you think that kid is still a teenager, you have to be amazed at his skill level and on ice awareness. what a great future all star he should turn out to be. i sure wish he was playing with the flyers, but hey, we now have a great defenseman in chris pronger and watching him play into his forties should be just as exciting. anyway, good luck to luca sbisa, a really nice kid who loves the game.

thanks for the update. While you are at it, do you have a Lupul and Upshall update? And could you please tell us all how Patrick Sharp is doing this year? It has been so long since we had one of his updates

hey, patrick sharp is a great player, just check out his stats. as for lupol, he rarely came up big in "big" games for the flyers. justin williams though is a another first rounder we gave away and he knew how to play defense to!

yeah I know.

I just get irritated at all the updates about how good ex-Flyer player are playing. It's like focusing on what you don't have instead of what you do.

Who cares is my point. They play for another friggin team and can do nothing to help this team win. Therefore I don't care how good they play or what success they have

I do like Sbisa, but agree with your point. Too often, there are posts regarding what was....and an update on Flyers past. Sharp, Sbisa, Lupul et al...will not help the current team win the cup, so who cares!!1

No. I really wouldn't. I have seen Coburn play and he is better that what we are seeing right now. He has playoff experience and league experience. Sbisa has no but promise right now. I would much rather have a proven player than a guy who should be real good later

Justin Williams is the biggest farce with Flyers fans.

The guy only eclipsed 30 goals and 40 points TWICE in his entire 10 year career. He's only ever had 2 full healthy seasons. He hasn't played in more than 30 odd games in a season since the 2006-07 season.

He's never done anything remotely spectacular outside of 2 30 goal, 70 point seasons in his entire career..

I would do that trade 8 days a week if I had to go back and do it again. Markov was absolutely crucial to our 2004 playoff run.

The Flyers mistake was not retaining Markov... not dealing Williams.

Enough already, Sbisa is not a Flyer and was used to acquire a HOF defensman.

We traded Sbisa for Pronger and IMHO, it was the right move for this Flyer team that is on the verge of greatness. If you are a Flyer fan why are you so interested in scouting former players? Why not focusing on scouting the team that you support?

I am clearly frustrated from last night and this is a sensitive topic, but is this type of scrutiny necessary, what is your point, that we should not have made the trade?

I did notice that Carlisle had Sbisa out for the final minute of the game before OT. That is some confidence a coach is showing to a 19 year old D-man.

He wasn't spectacular last night, but he was solid. I didn't notice him rushing the puck as much as I remember him carrying it for the Flyes last season.

At least in this case, he was playing AGAINST the Flyers. So it's at least somewhat relevant.

Although I appreciate your point on this, too.

As for Sbisa, it's a little funny because I remember thinking to myself during the game that I didn't think he was all that good. I think I noticed a flub here or there--but nothing I really remember now. Despite that, I found myself agreeing with USSNJ's post. For the most part, he was sound. Nothing spectacular, but sound. And at his age, sound is pretty good.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. There are a couple of others who try to get their point across in the same exact fashion. Irony?

Everything I've read from this individual has been a cluster---- of pessimism.

And Homer Looked Foolish.

This isn't about Pronger.

This is about Luca... and Luca was too good to trade for anything. Even Pronger.

The deal needed to get done without him or the deal simply didn't need to get done.

Let it go. The deal DID get done. Pronger IS here. Sbisa isn't. Complaining won't bring him back. Buy NHL center ice and you can watch him whenever you want
