The Founding Five by Maud Muller is a new novel that provides an interesting take on the idea that the reason America's political conscience has shifted to the right is because of a conservative conspiracy that began after Barry Goldwater's defeat in the 1965 Presidential election. Book has a strong liberal bias and presents a disturbing glimpse of what life in America will be like if conservative ideology is taken to the extreme. Although not a happy tale, it's certainly thought provoking in its attempt to depict the impact of an endless war against terror, the collapse of the social security system, public education under the control of the religious right and a federal government that has been privatized away. Muller has wrapped the social and political message up in a love story to help the medicine go down and there are more than a few cheap shots at the Republican Party, but it's still a good read for those worried about the direction the country is traveling.
