Just finished William Roetzheim's book of collected poems, 'Thoughts I Left Behind'. It's very readable, honest, and moving. Each poem, through original and fresh language, reveals another facet of the speaker -- from early 'firsts' (sensual experiences, military, love) to later feelings of reflective maturity. The book is a journey, and through the journey one is allowed insight into specific focuses that parallel the growth of the writer. Roetzheim reveals his humor, his love, his losses, and above all a spirit that pulls the reader in and makes him/her glad to know him for a short while.
