After spending a year in combat you develop certain habits which are necessary to your survival. These habits become reflexes and you are unable to simply stop doing them the day you get home, 6 months or years later. I still react the way I did in Iraq when placed in certain situations. The full physical, mental and emotional impact doesn't really hit you until you get home. When I got home I had no patience for anyone or anything. I would fly into a rage in an instant and return to normal just as fast. Nothing held my interest, I was unfocused, unmotivated and had problems with my memory. This placed a strain on my marriage, but we were able to work it out. I still have my days, but things are getting better because my family is there for me. It sounds cliche', but you can leave the war but the war never leaves you. |
